JOB SUMMARY:
The Mission of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is
to educate and graduate merchant marine officers and leaders of
honor and integrity who serve the maritime industry and armed
forces and contribute to the economic, defense, and homeland
security interests of the United States.
The USMMA is one of the five Federal Academies; it is a four-year,
residential college located on the North Shore of Long Island in
Western Nassau County. It is one of the world’s foremost
institutions in the field of maritime education. Located on 82

recreational facilities available to both faculty and staff. For

The position is that of a Sports Specialist (Athletic
Communications)/[Sports Information Director] in the Department of
Physical Education and Athletics. The Academy is a degree granting
institution fully accredited by the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Universities. Upon graduation,
the Midshipmen (male and female) are awarded Bachelor of Science
degrees, licensed as Merchant Marine Officers by the U.S. Coast
Guard and commissioned as Officers in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
The ideal candidate must be a highly motivated and experienced
professional possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity, and be
capable of adjusting to various work environments, physical
demands, and schedules. The individual must possess college level
teaching experience in physical education with a Master’s
degree or higher in an appropriate discipline, and college level
experience in a college sports information office.

If additional years are requested for the position, then for each
year with a satisfactory performance appraisal, an additional year
may be added to the appointment without further competition.
Major Duties:
You will be responsible for the development and conduct of
educational courses and programs, research, instruction and
academic counseling of Midshipmen, and assuming a share of
departmental and other academic responsibilities.
In addition, your background and credentials must demonstrate the
ability to teach Physical Education classes and perform the duties
of a Sports Information Director.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATIONS
Qualifications Required:
Qualification standards are used to determine which applicants
would be able to perform satisfactory in the position to be filled.
The education, training,
experience, or other requirements included in the qualification
standards are minimum requirements, i.e., it would be unlikely that
an applicant for employment would be able to perform satisfactorily
in a particular position or occupational series if he or she did
not possess these qualifications.
The minimum qualifications for this Sports Specialist position
include a Master’s Degree in an appropriate discipline and
demonstrated experience in college level teaching in Physical
Education activities for a specialized sports journalism course and
college level experience in a sports information office as an
Assistant Sports Information Director.
PREFERRED:
At least two or more full years of NCAA Division I, II or III
college level experience as an Assistant Sports Information
Director. At least one full year of NCAA Division I, II or III
college level sports experience as a Head Sports Information
Director.

procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year
